CANADIANS SHARE "BREAKING UP" STORIES

WirelessWave announces ‘You’re Breaking Up’ mobile phone contest winners

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (December 21, 2009) – With over 1,700 voters narrowing down their top ten favourites at the beginning of the month, WirelessWave, a national mobile phone retailer (www.wirelesswave.ca), officially announced the winners of the You’re Breaking Up online contest today. For the past 3 months, WirelessWave has been on a mission to find the best ‘Breaking Up’ stories as Canadians submitted 30-second songs or videos telling stories of angst, suffering and fleeting passion of the short lived love affair with their mobile phones.

“We launched the contest to build on the Love the Phone campaign to find out how Canadians felt about their up and down relationships with their mobile phones and were entertained and impressed by the creativity and the quality of entries,” said Cary Skidmore, VP of Marketing, Glentel. “The evident emotional attachment people have to their phones is amazing. It was a tough call to pick just one winner in each category.”

Winners received a trip to the 2010 Sundance Festival, a trip to the South by Southwest Music Festival for the best video and song respectively. A $2,500 scholarship was also awarded to the best entry from York University for their outstanding participation in the contest. Here is the list of winners:

Best song: I’ll Never Love Another Phone, Aedan Hoar

Best video: Self-Denial, Monica Sass

York Scholarship: Don’t You Cry, Couzyn van Heuvelen

The contest was based on WirelessWave’s Love the Phone campaign which stemmed from the key insight that mobile phones have become an extension of our lives – and the relationship almost parallels a love affair starting with excitement and passion, followed by envy and ultimately boredom. Launched in September, the contest was first opened to York University Media and Art students and Vancouver Film School students so they could provide their creative expression and was then opened to all Canadians through to November.
